I’m crossing into Mexico for the first time ever next week and will drive through for a day!

Make sure you take all info to get back across keep it in safe place. I got stuck once my drivers license was ripped. Stay out of back roads alone. Don't wear lots of jewelry or flash money around might get robbed. Make sure to have someone out of Mexico you tell where your going at all times. Good luck!

Sadly , it's dangerous to travel there as a tourist on your own.

I would not advise doing that right now. An American traveling through areas controlled by the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas at a time when a massive surge at the border is expected is trouble.

Don't drive around at night time. Don't go into sketchy back roads. Stay on main highways and in cities and you should be just fine. Much of Mexico is very developed and the rest is poor rural areas. Kinda like the USA when you think about it. Dont let anyone into your car. Lock your doors, Dont be flashy.
The border is the most dangerous area.
