Funny Travels: Let's go to Penile, Kentucky, USA

Welcome to Penile!

Don't let the above image fool you, it's not just the name of a road. They're just being modest by not having a proper sign for their community.

Penile is a rural community in Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. It's exact history and how it came to acquire its curious name is unknown, unfortunately (like I care). But it was a previously unincorporated community of Jefferson County before it merged with the city of Louisville in 2003, making it an official neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky since. Penile is pronounced "pa-neel" by the locals, noted for being a religious conservative community. But of course, the local pronunciation of the area has done fuсk all to spare them from others making puerile jokes about their name.

Though, it should be noted that there exists a small church in Pleasure Ridge Park, located in southwest Jefferson County that's called the "Peniel First Missionary Church". Apparently, the word "Peniel" refers to a place in the biblical Book of Genesis. So maybe the community of Penile really was supposed to be spelled Peniel, how the locals pronounce it, but whoever founded the place couldn't spell worth a shіt and so it got named Penile.

The most prominent sight to see is the historic Penile Baptist Church:

Or that's what the official brochures will tell you. If you want a real interesting sight to see, look for the corners of two streets that intersect the Penile Road pictured above. They are the corners of Penile and Cummings and Penile and Manslick.
