Do hotel door keys usually open more than just your own room?

I came back to my room after a night out with my friends, too drunk to realise I’d got the wrong room, swiped my key card and walked on some old guy working on a laptop. I realised and ran away feeling embarrassed to my actual room/

Surely I shouldn’t have got through the door with my room card?

Staff carry a master key. Top staff have access to a grand-master key for making more master keys. Sometimes wrong room numbers are assigned. Staff error.

@SarahPP Front desk is a high paced, often chaotic area. It's possible that a staff member was making masters and room keys at the same time and then mistook the piles.
