I'm an ex foster carer and have three adopted children, they have all experienced a lot of trauma. The impact that their trauma has had on them has been a life long battle and I've had to parent very differently, constantly learning how we could make life easier and provide coping strategies. Simple things which we take for granted, like a meal in a restaurant, have been very hard for my children. My middle son in particular was very sensitive to who might be behind him so we leaned to ask for a table that was against the wall so that he was reassured that nobody was behind him. We don't know why he has such sensitivity and he can't remember but the body remembers even if the mind doesn't! I think my older two especially have lived in a constant state of fear, they were both extremely hypervigilant growing up and it makes sense that if you're constantly trying to cope with that level of fear and anxiety, you're not mentally in a place where you can concentrate and learn easily.

@Justmeraeagain It doesn't matter how long ago it was. Your body remembers it. You're still in fight or flight mode, from your nervous system remembering the event. You haven't healed yet. That's why I suggest that book, The Body Keeps the Score. You may not realize it but you have layers of trauma and patterns. When you teach your body how to relax, you won't have those, as your body will begin to send a signal to your brain that you're safe.

@LadyGrace @Justmeraeagain The book that Grace recommended "The body keeps the score" by Bessel van der Kolk is brilliant. I highly recommend xx

@PatientlyWaiting25 It sure is. And thank you! It changed my life. I can't recommend it enough.

Mhmm I have never heard that but the older I get the more the trauma bothers me. When I was younger I dealt with it and just lived my life. But now that I am older it doesn’t totally consume me but it indeed brings memory gaps and concentration issues.
Yes absolutely this is the case for me
