Actually, you can. Not to go sounding 'religious' on you or anything remotely like that, but you will find that if you simply sit quietly and 'forgive' each memory that comes into your mind, you will find that they will become erased. If they re-appear, then continue to forgive that same old memory. In a short time and very magically, those memories will disappear forever.

Ok, I understand. But if those old memories return just as strongly as before, it is because you have not finished dealing with them. What makes the more recent events more traumatic is their similarity. When you cancel out the old ones, that will also have a positive effect on any similar new ones that come along in the future. In other words, when you entirely forgive those old memories, it automatically forgives any similar events that come in the future and it also stops those similar events from even happening in the future in the first place.
