A serious question…

Say you have neighbors with whom you’re friendly and have more than a nodding acquaintance; whom you trust.

If one day you saw them being taken away by the authorities, would you go out to ask what was going on ?

Would you check and see if the neighbors needed you to call anyone on their behalf ?

Or would you close your blinds and assume the neighbors were being treated fairly and according to the law ?

And that getting involved would only cause you problems ?

🥺

Define the level of getting involved. Asking of the family to check if they are in need of anything is okay, but there is a fine line between checking on welfare and interfering. The authorities are under no obligation to talk with you and if you get strident in asserting that they do you will find yourself in handcuffs as well.

It is good to pay attention and check on their wellbeing but don't put yourself in the position of interfering with an arrest. Once someone is in handcuffs and on the way to jail there is nothing you can do to avoid the justice system from running its course.
@bowman81 ICE took away the wife of one of my father’s neighbors (and two of her relatives who lived in the household). Pop didn’t witness it, but heard about it after the fact. Ironically, the husband had become a Trump supporter, and people in the neighborhood (including Pop) had cooled towards them. We were talking about the fact that Mom would’ve probably tried to help them anyway.
