Sucking it up means you are not true to yourself.
I don't think this situation is black or white. I don't think there is one answer.
Maybe it's working out a fine balance of being there for someone without compromised self.
Also, people have to learn to be self sufficient. What if you always being there for someone doesn't allow them that? I say this not knowing the dynamics of these people in your life.
Overall, I think it is self abandonment to do things out of sucking it up because of cards we are dealt.

@thinkingoutloud i hear ya. I just know i'd be blaming myself should something happen. Knowing full well I could have sacrificed a bit of myself/happiness to help.
