Wednesday Thoughts

I have been thinking about apologies, forgiveness, and grace. Sometimes it can be very hard to know the motive behind an apology. Are they saying sorry because they care that they messed up and upset me? Are they saying sorry because they don't want to deal with the discomfort of my emotions and just want to feel better? Are they saying sorry so we will just move on to something new?

Of course, we all make mistakes, and everyone should give grace from time to time since we all need a bit of grace. Also, I think forgiveness is more for me than the other person too, because I surely don't deserve to hold onto hurt emotions.

The thing is, though, that there are degrees of hurt and patterns of behavior. Sometimes it is really easy to see when we have to leave someone out of our life because the hurt was obvious, big, and deliberate. Other times, it's like a bunch of little microtransactions of unchanged behavior. Sometimes those little microtransactions are very small, and it's like, okay, do I take the good with the bad or not?

There is a lot this kind of stuff depends on, and it isn't always easy to know when to let them back in or if we should accept some irritating behaviors or not. I guess I feel that if they really cared about the relationship, maybe they would have done more to understand my feelings or fix things.

Maybe I was just someone who made them feel good for a time, and it isn't worth cultivating the relationship. Maybe they feel they did nothing wrong and have no reason to look at my perspective or feelings, and how dare I cause this drama.

It weighs on me, and from my perspective, it doesn't weigh on them. Anyway, these are just some thoughts I have had about some events in my life this year.

You have been thinking about a topic I think about a lot. I had a friend whom I met my senior year in High school.

In 2003, we reconnected. He had a fiancée. One night they fought, and I jumped in to stop it. Cops were called. He had raised his hands to her and when I jumped in, His mind went to I was sleeping with her. She went back to her home state. He went to anger management.

Years went by fast. He lost his Mother and pushed everyone away. One day his Dad came and asked me to reconnect with him. His Dad soon passed away, and he changed for the worse.

Everyone was a liar and a cheat. He demanded I be his only friend and vise versa. He would try to have me prove myself over and over. I'd walk away for a few months. I had a good sit-down as you described, and I'd think maybe I was being a prick.

Go back to the same cycle of toxic crap after he'd be alright for a bit. Then he started getting angry that I could talk to people, especially women. He admitted he scared women away because he would just stare at them. He admitted to a porn addiction. I tried to help. That failed. I'd walk away for a few months. I went back because I felt bad, and the cycle began.

One day, after years of therapy, I finally told him I couldn't do it. Now, I don;t know where he is, but I have a feeling he won't change.
@WanderingHelplessly You can't let someone drag you down just because you feel sorry for them. You have to think of your own quality of life and as you said you have tried. If he makes the chances he might find some friends so it is really on him where he wants his quality of life to be and you just have to let him make those choices.

This is such a good point, and honestly, I’ve often thought about the same thing. I’ve had some relatives and friends hurt me, then apologize, but sometimes I could feel that their apology was more about their own comfort than genuine regret.

What hurt most was that they were people I considered my own. They knew me well and knew what kind of person I am. I always tried to think that people make mistakes, so I forgave them. But when the same things keep happening, something changes in me.

I can forgive, but the relationship is never quite the same. I naturally start keeping my distance because I don’t want to be hurt in the same way again. To me, a sincere apology isn’t just about saying sorry it shows in the effort to understand your feelings and change the behavior.
If there are bad things more than good things, it's not worth it.
Also, a lot of the times one should just listen to their gut.

Lastly, it really boils down to how much are you willing to tolerate and whether it's worth it. What giving up - dignity? Peace? Time? For what you're getting.
@greensnacks Yeah there is a lot to consider and every situation is different too. Environment can be a big factor too. When my dad passed away in 2018 I didn't have as much patience at that time.

This is a deep topic, your perspective and feelings are what matters. I hope one day you get to sit down with that person and have a good conversation to clear things up and decide from there whether you want them in your life again.
I have cut a lot of people out if my life, including family. 🫂
@RebelRaven That is good. I haven't seen you be mean to anyone so you really don't deserve anyone to disrupt your peace.

@DeadOrbit thank you, not anymore anyway, I’ve put up with enough for long enough.
@RebelRaven I respect that greatly, and try to always bring positive vibes.
We all reach a point of no return and we change. We no longer put up with it or accept that it's ok. I tend to go quietly. The slow ghosting.
@V00dooLovesTheMoon I would notice
@DeadOrbit Youre not the kind of person that would need to be let go of.
Saying it is one thing.

But BEING it , is a completely different kettle of fish.

The easiest way to sift through all these "ifs' and 'buts' is...
...to watch their actions, they put to those words.
Consistent actions. 🫤
@OogieBoogie i usually give 3 or 4 chances with people but you are right.
