Tuesdays Thoughts

I honestly get tired of the privilege talks. I don’t really think it makes a better world to spend every second of every day trying to find a new way I am privileged. I approach life like I do everyone else, and I try to be mindful as well as respectful. We all have a story. We all have a controversy's. We all have challenges. I recognize I am blessed in many ways, while I have also had many challenges I have overcome.

It feels like we built a society where people are looking to out-“feel sorry for me” each other. And why am I constantly having to prove myself just because you see a product that isn’t where it used to be?

Alcoholic parents - survived
Kicked out of my house as a child - survived
Molested that same year - survived
Pushed through the education system - survived
Beaten to a pulp for 17 years - survived
No friends - survived
Crippling depression and anxiety - survived
Homeless - survived
Addiction - survived
No money - survived
Military and 3 tours of war - survived

So what if I have money now? So what if I have an education now? So what if I have privileges now? I got here by fighting and showing up every day to work on myself and beat the rules thrown at me when I was born. I didn’t get here by crying, complaining, or finding all the ways I wasn’t privileged.

I think what will really help society, other than pointing out privileges, is to do some self-reflection and discover where we have implicit biases, then challenge those biases to put ourselves in other people’s shoes.

Controversy over. I am just tired of people telling me how lucky I have things. It disrespects the fight I had to get here.

If you have your own Tuesday thoughts feel free to leave them here and tell me if you wish. I am always willing to lend an ear.

First off, holy cow, you survived a lot. I agree with you on the privilege rants people go on. It hurts me to see people suffer, but I remember when I never had a place like this to "vent" or be silly.

One reason I like this place is that, with the good, I've found the bad. Have I had my feelings ripped up in my face? It's happened a few times. I know I've maybe done the same without knowing.

I've started looking at life differently. I had someone point out to me a co-worker, whom I actually graduated with. Who causes me grief in every way and might be hurt by something I did a long time ago. He said, "Listen to what she says about back then." I realised she's never matured. She's still thinking like a little girl. "I like him. I'll throw rocks. That will get him to notice me." No, it's made me hate her, and I dislike hating people.

It's like when I was rejected because I don't look a certain way. I like myself. I love that, in time, what is seen as flaws can be worked on. I have a few friends I can count on. I have met some great people here. I've met a few who are trying too hard to hide their insecurities.
@WanderingHelplessly People have to go through discomforts to grow so maybe she just hasn't faced those

@DeadOrbit This feels like the conversation I had with my boss today. I had to swallow a hard pill by admitting my mistakes. He told me I have to stop seeing it as a flaw and see it more as a goal for improvement.
@WanderingHelplessly He seems pretty smart, but that shows good leadership.

This is a sliver of what I thought when I read this post.

It's like being content or just happy is something to be ashamed of . Shame seems to be the weapon of choice .For every instance you sighted there will be people saying you should be ashamed. I once long ago posted about being molested, lots of supportive responses ,but there were the well you should have told someone, the you let it happen the oh the shame responses.
@kodiac It is crazy how many people fake happiness for an accomplishment, wanting what you have but saying they can’t because of whatever environmental excuse there is, and because I was able to get here, I am just lucky. No one seems like they want to be happy for others. As soon as you get to a place of privilege, you are no longer an ally but an enemy.

Sorry you got victim-blamed. That isn’t right either. I think people can’t face discomfort, so they try to understand why something happens without facing the reality that there are just bad people in this world doing bad things. So they blame people like us for what we did or didn’t do instead.
