The Duolingo app won't let me practice to get more hearts. I only have one.

It says I can add friends to get more hearts, or I can change to a paying subscription or I can use gems which are hard to get. I've been using the app for over a year and I've always been able to practice to earn hearts. I feel like it's a manipulative technique to get you to change to a paying subscription.

You get 5 hearts and you lose one each time you miss an answer on a new lesson. But you can practice older lessons and get a heart for each lesson practiced. Then when you get 5 hearts you can do a new lesson. OR you can wait and time will replenish them. I think it's 5 hours for each heart. Most of the time I wait but every once in a while I'll practice an older lesson to earn hearts.
