I felt so badly for them

My gf and I just returned from a vacation. We stayed in a hotel on the 5th floor, and on our way down to the lobby, the elevator stopped at the 3rd floor. About 6 women were hesitant to pile on, but I said "Sure, there's room!" and backed up so they could enter. Now, these women were, not large, but let's say zaftig and tall as well.

Right as the last woman entered, a voice warning sounded "There is too much weight on this elevator. Please make adjustments" or something like that, and the women quickly exited, mouths agape, laughing nervously, but I knew they were mortified.

I felt so badly. I knew that had to be difficult to hear, and indeed, I'd never heard such a warning coming from a dang elevator, of all things.

In a world where women are endlessly subjected to grossly idealized, unrealistic body images and mixed messages, that just seemed cruel. Sigh.

Your reaction to that happening is really thoughtful and nice to read, it's like one of those needed little reminders that kind people really still exist.

I've never heard that from an elevator before either

@Notsimilarreally Thank you. I realize that the elevator is just doing its job, but that can't be easy to hear.

@uncalled4 wait, isn't the typical max capacity over 2000 lbs?

Yeah, surely if they're on the larger size that could probably be a bit triggering to hear.

@Notsimilarreally i didn't see a weight listed.
It's not just about the women, though... that would have happened no matter what was placed in the elevator once its weight limit was exceeded.

It could've been rugby players, weight lifting equipment or anything else you can think of - it's just unfortunate that it happened to be a group of women in this case.

True. But ignoring the issue (stress on elevator) is not an option

@SW-User indeed. We're into a safety issue then.

I get it if it was just two of you, and one woman got on and took it over the limit, but not 6? Why should anyone be embarrassed about it? Even the last woman of the 6, it wasn't her weight alone. It could have been a child that got on and tipped it over the limit.
