My one track mind
Last night before going to bed, and after last post i treated myself to some more Criterion supplements to films recently watched. Slavoj Zizek when he was invited into the Criterion closet said that the supplements were more interesting than the films themselves, and he has a good point. The supplements ignite a passion for the subject, i can't tell you how often i've been spiritually moved by hearing highly technical talk about the particulars of what goes into making films, the types of film stock, color grading, conversations between people who do this for a living are simply giving a peek into the magic, and dryness and specificity make it all so much more intriguing for me, it's like i don't want to do what they're doing, i'm not studying to become one of them, like many admirers of Criterion would be, but it's a facet of a thing i truly love, it's letting the appreciation grow.
The last selection was Ingmar Bergman talking about Victor Sjostrom, and the illuminating part on Wild Strawberries, was like that final shot in the film so poignant, it's a film i consider one of the greatest, and in that supplement distilled is the essence of that film experienced again.
