A watershed wake period

Recently i made a big whoop about the amount of films to be seen, but i've come through that with a pronounced emphasis on quality, and thanks to streaming there can also be quantity along with that.

The mark of excellence isn't set in stone, but a general gist of what one considers excellent could be established you would think. My dear SW family is regretfully subjected to my birth pangs (exercises) of appreciation expression, i never think i do a good job, a forced modesty that is just a default safety measure.

Art films is as good as any descriptor for the kinds of films i put on a pedestal, i also recognize how a unsympathetic viewer would see them, as simply and bluntly put boring. What i believe is perhaps being missed in such assessments is how these films are a portal into how to see the world and humanity differently. I am a kind of person that loves seeing things through that sort of lens, where it's the careful and deliberate expression of a director in full mastery of their metier.

Some blurring of the lines happens when we're considering for example classic Hollywood, in my reductivist (is that a word) imaginings, a good classic Hollywood film is where entertainment and artistry coalesce into a beautiful symbiotic entity. Whereas the non-english arthouse to me has a clear order of rank with the 2 aspects, the aesthetic being predominant, and the entertainment aspect being secondary. Perhaps it is for me just the fact that it's foreign makes it feel like that way for me, but there it is, in all it's reductiveness.

I am so enjoying my 2nd phase with fine cinema, first phase occurred between 2004 to around 2011ish, around 2011, social media invaded my personal life, and it was and is enriching, but slowly and methodically i lost the ability to keep the film loving alive. Now since streaming has burst into actuality for me, a 2nd chance is happening, i am letting it not only live, but thrive.

GN for now 😴
