If they follow me but never message you should I be creeped out?

WHy would following someone mean they should message them? I follow a lot of SW'ers and very rarely message them unless invited, especially members of the opposite sex. If someone is of a like mind, I appreciate their opinion or the challenge they bring to my opinion. My comments for the most part are in the posts unless I get messaged.
