What a lovely day
Learned a new word - cruft, there's a book examining cruft in mega novels .... it's when there's digressions from the plot.
I go on and on about it, but i owe alot to Chris Via (Leaf By Leaf), and to those of his ilk for being like guides to appreciating things that seem daunting, but which are things i really want to get down and boogie with.
The Recognitions, how can i use my own words for it so far?
Well, it's dealing with an issue of what is real in a society where such a thing have been largely evaporated. When Nietzsche proclaimed the death of God, he was imo simply proclaiming modernity, what the modern is, when beliefs are overshadowed by the progress of say science.
Gaddis' novel has a character who's strongly gifted in art, painting, but is employed to copy from the masters, questions of originality and so on.
It's title is taken from the first Christian novel by Clement in the 300's. The main character's aunt is a staunch Calvinist, who sees his drawings as evil, the idea of graven images and so on.
So much time is needed on it, and the first reading is merely a preparation for the real read which is the 2nd, which is something William Gass says that Chris relays.
Speaking out of school, apologies to Chris for speaking of him here and so much as if we go way back, i have left a few comments and he's kind enough to reply.
That's the thing folks, when you come upon someone admirably well read and giving in their demeanor, they're also approachable, it's like for example imagine after giving an amazing concert, Bjork would set apart a time with some devoted fans in a cafe to talk further with them. That kind of thing, yeah!!
I promise to not mention others too much anymore, i just had a special new to me kind of day, when it becomes normatized, i'll be more chill about things and just think out loud for myself without having the need to always being citing someone else.
I wish y'all a real good day/evening, and i assume it's ok if i just do my thing from now on, whatever that entails. GN :)
