We hold those who are most powerful to the highest standards and blame them for everything that's happening.
It makes sense from the perspective of preventing harm, but it leads to some ridiculous double standards. Non-human animals act just as bad as humans do -- often even worse -- but we (correctly) ascribe them no moral agency, and therefore view them as innocent (which is an oversimplification). Humans don't get such a pass, which leads to us viewing ourselves as uniquely evil.
