The demographic "desperate men" is relatively small compared to the whole of men, but they are willing to shell out ALL of their money just to see women naked and get a little attention from them.
Kind of like how freemium games make all their money on a small slice of people who have a gambling issue, yet end up raking in millions because they spend SO much of all they've got.
Now, if you want to make lots of money with minimal effort then yes you're going to have to be conventionally beautiful in order to attract the wealthiest donors (because having more wealth means having more options and less need to settle). But if you're willing to grind (post lots, talk lots, and do fetish stuff) then yes you can make bank no matter what you look like.
