I believe that this quote is meant to say that even when we are social creatures and loving others and being loved by them brings us most joy than anything, if you don't love yourself you'll never be able to love anyone or be completely loved by anyone.. if you don't love yourself you'll go through life pretending to be something you're not and those who love you will never have a chance to see who you truly are.. if you learn to love yourself you'll realize you deserve to be treated with care with compassion, and you will demand such from those who claim to love you, just as you will deliver those to them... that's a very important step, if you love the people around you, and hate the person you are, or are incapable of spending a day on your own without breaking, that means you are suffering from co-dependecy and that is NEVER good for any healthy relationship.

I agree with everything you just said, rav :) Also, it's not necessarily just love, but a form of approval or acceptance as well. A lot of people feel like they need the approval of others and while seeking it they don't act like themselves and end up losing their identity, instead of being confident about their own identity and finding people who love them for who they are.
