Our Furnace Went Off This Afternoon….

Was shivering and put on a fleece shirt. Thought it was just me because I had set down and rested after cleaning up the kitchen. Then the boy started feeling cold too and looked at the thermostat. The temperatures had fallen a bit in the house, no heat coming from the vents either. He is enrolled in his second year of high school Vo-Tech for heat & air. Said he didn’t think he could fix it because he didn’t have the tools for it. His grandpa called our heat & air guy. He said he off of work and wouldn’t be back on duty for work till tomorrow morning and that just about all heat & air places would tell us the same thing. So the boy & him went back out into the garage and gave the furnace a look-over. Said the there was no flame, the fan was going. The boy decided to check the automatic pilot igniter. He thought it needed to be cleaned. They spent about 30 minutes total and he got the igniter cleaned and it started working again. Then he said something interesting. If you don’t have the ultra fine grade of sandpaper that they clean the igniters with you can use a dollar bill and it will do the trick. So that’s what he used.

I spent that time thinking of what all we could do until tomorrow to get some heat in the house….start baking things in the oven, use the gas fireplace, take the small space heater in the garage and put it in the back bathroom, etc. Didn’t need to do any of that.

We had this problem last year for like 4 days straight. I slept in a mummy bag on the floor with the dog to keep him warm. I also borrowed a space heater, one of the oil ones from a neighbor, and then hung up sheets and stuff in any doorways to keep the heat to that room since the heater can't heat much space.

You can bake things, fill the bathtub with really hot water.

I'm glad you got it fixed so easily. Ours keeps getting water in it from an intake pipe somehow.

@4meAndyou Ray went ahead and called the a/c guy back and told him he wanted him to do preventative maintenance on the furnace. He came out around noon and checked everything out. Said the igniter needed to be replaced because it wouldn’t be long till it went out and couldn’t be cleaned again. He had to drive to Moore to get the part and drive back. Left the igniter here for the boy & Ray to look at. I think we’ll be good till the a/c is being used. Charged $150 and Ray thought he should have gotten a tip and said next time he would get a good one.

@pedrohedgerow Thank you…it got really cold here for a few days and still hasn’t gotten above freezing. There is still snow on the ground (9 inches) that hasn’t melted. The boys has had school cancelled since Friday and tomorrow too.

At least the electricity didn’t go out. We could have used the cookstove (I was thinking of baking quite a bit to use the oven), have one space heater that doesn’t heat all that much but better than nothing and then a small one that gets hot but I feel like it needs to be watched when in use. Those two would have kept the plumbing in the bathrooms from freezing up. The oven would have kept the laundry room and kitchen plumbing from freezing. And we have a gas fireplace that could be used but it won’t heat the entire house and it doesn’t heat the living room as warm as we like it.
