@rinkydinkydoink They are still available. SANGEAN still makes them. I have a beautiful SR-25 FM/AM portable transistor radio. (AM 530-1710kHz, FM 87.5-108 MHz. ) It's pretty good with two long-lasting AA batteries. The SR-35, presumably its successor, is available on Amazon:
@helenS another company bought the name and have an online presence. There are still a few independent stores around the US. One i think is in Tennessee.
Thanks for the link - I had no idea they were still "a thing". And the price actually seems cheaper (considering inflation) than the one I had. My buddy had a Sony which was considered the best at the time.
@rinkydinkydoink Danger, Will Robinson! Chances are the cheapest ones contain an integrated circuit. That's not bad per se, but it's not a traditional transistor radio.
@rinkydinkydoink There may perhaps be a DC-DC converter chip inside. Because, old-school transistor radios were equipped with a 9V transistor battery (9V are perfect to drive a transistor); and the SANGEAN has 2xAA, Σ=3V, so chances are that voltage is converted to something like 9V internally.
