Starlink is amazing! The up front cost is steep, but it is affordable after that. I work from home, with large files, and it has never gone down.

@Neman1622 $599, then $150 a month just for internet ? 😱
No thanks.
No thanks.
@Neman1622 cuz elon needs MORE money
@bijouxbroussard dont forget the random posts elon projects on the ceiling you cant stop unless you pay 50$ extra/month

@TryingtoLava where I live it's starlink or nothing. Literally. He's doing a great service

@Neman1622 Not if that’s what you’re paying. Maybe for a business owner it balances out, but for residential service that’s outrageous. And I’d have no desire to make Elon Musk wealthier.
Neman1622 · 41-45, M
@bijouxbroussard where do you live? The last 2 or 3 places I've lived cable internet, not including tv service, was $70 -$80 a month
bijouxbroussard · F
@Neman1622 SF Bay Area. I’m paying $80 for DSL. I looked up Starlink and was quoted $150, with $599 installation.
Neman1622 · 41-45, M
@bijouxbroussard oh, it's only $90 month here. But there is the initial cost, yes
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Neman1622 Starlink is also really slow for the money.
Neman1622 · 41-45, M
@sarabee1995 I'm shocked you feel that way. It's been a total saviour for us, and barely slower than any cable internet I've had
Elessar · 26-30, M
@sarabee1995 It's satellite based, it comes with all the disadvantages of a satellite network. High latency, instability and higher costs are no surprising at all.
It's a lifesaver if you're anywhere remote, but that's about that

@Neman1622 woah woah no need to get hostile were all just havin a convo
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Elessar Exactly
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Neman1622 Speed specs are published. It's very slow compared to fiber which costs far less. It's only advantage, as already pointed out, is rural areas.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Neman1622 It's still a significantly higher latency (and jitter) compared to a wired medium. Even the wifi I have on my desk, in spite of being a few meters away from my phone, has measurably higher latency and jitter than the ethernet cable. Let alone something in orbit, no matter how low. It's a physical limitation of wireless networks, it doesn't matter how fancy they are, physics won't bend its rules to accommodate Musk.
I've taken a telecommunications study path and I've studied these things. If anything, the one who sounds clueless (read: "don't know shìt") are you Elongelicals.

@sarabee1995 And warzones, when the a$s in chief doesn't shut it down right in the middle of an operation
