Looking for a new internet provider. Possibly new phone service as well…

The old ways aren’t cutting it, might as well downsize completely this spring. Are there any companies or plans that you’re particularly happy with if you use your internet a lot ?
itsok · 31-35, F
I have unlimited internet with xfinity for $90 a month. I’ve always been happy with speed (with gaming and streaming) and they’re rarely down here.
Hanginginthere · 31-35, M
@itsok seems like you’re throwing money away but hey you do you I guess 🤷🏾‍♂️
itsok · 31-35, F
@Hanginginthere seems like we have different internet needs
Neman1622 · 41-45, M
@itsok yeah, that's the thing, different needs. I transfer large 3D model files for work. On regular speed internet that transfer was really really slow
Neman1622 · 41-45, M
Starlink is amazing! The up front cost is steep, but it is affordable after that. I work from home, with large files, and it has never gone down.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Neman1622 Speed specs are published. It's very slow compared to fiber which costs far less. It's only advantage, as already pointed out, is rural areas.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Neman1622 It's still a significantly higher latency (and jitter) compared to a wired medium. Even the wifi I have on my desk, in spite of being a few meters away from my phone, has measurably higher latency and jitter than the ethernet cable. Let alone something in orbit, no matter how low. It's a physical limitation of wireless networks, it doesn't matter how fancy they are, physics won't bend its rules to accommodate Musk.

I've taken a telecommunications study path and I've studied these things. If anything, the one who sounds clueless (read: "don't know shìt") are you Elongelicals.

@sarabee1995 And warzones, when the a$s in chief doesn't shut it down right in the middle of an operation

Several factors enter into it. What do you use the internet for? Do you live in a single family home or multi tenancy? Your zip code? You might be able to get a 5-G plan that covers everything.

googel check intenet speed. benchmark against what would be avg for you area (agian use google) you might get my recommendations but it won't help in the way you may think it will.

For instance in NJ their are two large providers Infinity and Verizon. Both have their advantages but it based almost complely on where you live in NJ If I recommended one or the other to a fellow New Jersey person and they lived in an area where the other was stronger I am helping them.

On a side note internet providers are a non-regulated oligopoly that run like a utility but are not reguated as one. (in the USA ) you only probably have a couple of choices.

Phone service is a different question. I am not sure how to figure out how well yours does compared to othes in your area.
i gotta switch/adjust plans too. i'm spending 260 cad (about 190 usd) a month on my landline phone (which i don't need), cable (many channels i don't watch) internet (of course i need) ...
Neman1622 · 41-45, M
@beermeplease you can get starlink in Canada as well. I pay $90 month for it. As for a phone, I use a Walmart prepaid phone. So I own the device, and pay just 55 a month for unlimited data
@Neman1622 hmmm ok. the cool thing is i don't pay for my cell phone. my work pays for it ..that's why i don't use it for social media stuff. thanks for the tip 😃
deadgerbil · 22-25
I use the internet a ton and I'm satisfied with ATT. Unfortunately, my area isn't being offered fiber optic in the foreseeable future as they are still upgrading their infrastructure
@deadgerbil I have AT&T too, and have had DSL through my landline. They’re trying to get rid of landlines in the Bay Area.
Ontheroad · M
I'm guessing what we have here isn't what is available in CA, but the best I've ever had was ATT's Fiber. Reliability and speed/bandwidth is excellent.
Pfuzylogic · M
I was on Sprint which turned into T-Mobile. I get 50 gig of 5g for around $45 a month, After the limit they give their bandwidth available
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
Where I live my choices were Verizon and Comcast. I went with Verizon for both phone and home Internet. I guess I'm happy. I mean... it works. 🤷‍♀️
ArtieKat · M
I'm just changing my broadband provider - Virgin Media prices have just got ridiculous!
It might help if you post how you use your internet .
Moivies?
Youtube
Music
Gaming?
Do you use if for work ?

Gaming needs a high dowmload speed , movies a litte less unless you have a whole household watching diffwrent ones at the same time .
Howmany people in the house will be using it?

If it just you , you shoukd be looking at around maybe 30?....(although thats hard to find now), maube $40? per month🤷

Im not very smart on tech, so dont pay a huge amount of attetnion to me.

But i do know i pay about 40, and we had a professional gamer stay with us forn a while - and we did ok untill they had their friends here one night while they were gaming, and the other 4 were on tiktok and YouTube ....and my netflix wouldn't load .

You often dont need at much as you think you do .
@OogieBoogie I have puzzles and occasionally take online classes. I also have an online coloring book. The only social media I have is SW and ZEPETO, which lets me design avatars. A couple of other posters have profiles there, too.

I do also use Roku, Prime and Paramount + for tv, now that I’m rid of cable.
I found this , dunno if it will help

@OogieBoogie Thank you. This gives me some ideas.
Hanginginthere · 31-35, M
I like Comcast, I only pay $40 a month, great service so far
Hanginginthere · 31-35, M
@bijouxbroussard for phone I use Verizon which I now regret as im paying $80 a month for just me, and I dont have cable, I mostly watch YouTube or paramount plus on occasion
Hanginginthere · 31-35, M
@beermeplease I didn't think of that, but perhaps yes
@beermeplease I’m trying to find one of those great deals. I think even then it depends on zip code.
