My Trend Security is scanning for Trojan files?

It has been scanning for 70 minutes now and is at 58% complete with 650,000 files scanned.
That sounds ridiculous. How is it even possible? A cheap HP Laptop

Why do you need such a program? Windows has quite a lot of security built-in these days.

I haven't seen a convincing report of a virus or trojan in many years.

My children (all grown up) use Windows and none of them have anti virus software. They don't experience any problems either, but they are careful about what they install.
