Surfers are like Eskimos with all their terms for waves and surf

Waves:
A-frame: A wave that peaks and breaks to both the left and right simultaneously.
Barrel: When the lip of the wave curls over the surfer, creating a tube-like ride.
Greenroom: A slang term for the inside of a barrel.
Swell: A series of waves that has traveled a long distance from a distant weather system.
Maneuvers:
Carve: A powerful turn on the wave's face.
Shredding: Riding a wave in an aggressive and skillful manner.
Air/Aerial: A maneuver where the surfer and board leave the water.
Conditions:
Glassy: A condition where the ocean is calm and smooth, without wind.
Onshore/Offshore Wind: Onshore wind blows towards the beach, while offshore wind blows away from the beach, with offshore wind generally creating better wave conditions.

My surf travel resume is impressive (Bali Maldives canaries Hawaii Costa Rica I can go on and on). I haven’t gotten better in like 20 years . Now I use veteran tricks to catch waves .

@Ferise1 some places are very forgiving of rookie mistakes . Some places (Hawaii Puerto Rico Brazil ) not so much . Me and a buddy got chased out of the lineup in makaha HI in the 90’s.

Here on LI we just had world class surf from hurricane Erin. We get world class surf 5 days a year. Maybe
Hawaiians have as many words to describe waves as Eskimo’s have for snow

@Jokersswild yeah it’s fascinating, they really surf all the time and there’s nuance about every piece of the wave and manoeuvres. I’m not even sure what they mean by shoulder, pocket, foamball etc… I have a vague idea 😊
