I Grew Up In Poverty

Lots of people think Native Americans have it easy in this country since many reservations across the nation make money off gaming or other types of funding. But we're actually one of the poorest demographics in the US. The community that makes up my reservation has always been a poor, impoverished one. It's gotten a little better over the years but when I was growing up, life wasn't easy. I don't know where I would be now if my mom didn't receive a share of the profits made by our tribe's casino. For many here, that's the only thing keeping a roof over their heads.

People who pop off about Native Americans "having it easy" have probably never visited a reservation. Natives also have a much higher suicide rate, particularly with young people. It's messed up.
I've had the chance to be on a handful of them. Not always treated really well as a white guy but a few times the people could not have been more kind and gracious. Really stuck with me.
Thank you. :) It's pretty frustrating how some people still believe we don't have to pay taxes and get casino money all the time. Thank you for understanding.
