I did the same. I hated the bullies for what they did, but I found it's just best to leave them and look for people who didn't need to treat other people that way. I don't know why they do. I guess it just makes them feel bigger.

I wouldn't call this bullies but lack of mental health awareness. The psychological manipulation behind domestic violence is something few people can grasp unless they've been there themselves or have a deep insight into psychology.

To most people, they think since you're not physically restrained, you can walk out the door.

It's logic due to their knowledge. But I agree it's incredibly invalidating and victim blaming even if that's not the intention.
