Finding Joy in the Afterglow of the Holidays

How do you feel after the holidays? Do you experience a sense of emptiness or sadness, as the holiday excitement winds down? Actually, that's perfectly normal.

You have all this hustle and bustle, joy and what have you, the glitter fades and the gifts have been opened and then bam!... the next day, nothing. It's easy to feel like something's missing. But I want to remind you today that "God's mercies are new every morning." (Lamentations 3:23) Praise God!

Just like the Israelites, we often get caught up in the festivities, and forget that our hope and joy come from the Lord!

But what if we shifted our focus? What if, instead of dwelling on the post-holiday letdown, we look for ways to celebrate God's loving presence in our lives every day?

Here's one thing we CAN do.

Now, would be the perfect time to focus on the things that bring you joy and peace. Reading the Bible truly lifts and refreshes our soul with joy, peace, and love. Whether it's reading, spending time with loved ones, or simply taking a quiet moment for yourself, make time for what nourishes your soul. It's then, you will find that peace that passes all understanding. Specifically, Philippians 4:7, which says, "And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

This "peace that surpasses understanding" isn't just absence of trouble, but that deep, inner calm and harmony that comes from the presence of God! Peace is given through scripture reading, prayer, and trust in Jesus, even amid life's difficulties, guarding believers from debilitating depression and anxiety. It has worked for me every time. That's because there's simply no substitute for Jesus and what he can do for us.

Practical Tips to Beat the Blues:

Make Reasonable Goals: Set achievable goals for the new year, and don't be too hard on yourself.

Get a Hobby or Renew the Old One You Forgot: Engage in activities that stimulate your mind and fuel your passion, like playing your favorite instrument, painting, drawing, collecting, or writing/journaling.

Prioritize Self-Care: Take care of your body and mind, by getting enough sleep, eating well, and exercising regularly. You come first!

Seek Support: Reach out to friends, family, or a professional if you're feeling overwhelmed.

Focus on Giving: Shift your focus to helping others, whether it's volunteering or small acts of kindness.

Scriptures for Comfort:

- "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." (Psalm 34:18)
- "Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you." (1 Peter 5:7)
- "Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)

You are loved, and you are not alone. Take time to rest and recharge, and know that better days are ahead.

May this devotional bring comfort and encouragement to those who are feeling the post-holiday blues!

*Prayer:*

Dear Heavenly Father, help us to remember that You are our constant source of hope and joy, not just the festivities. Give us wisdom to prioritize time with You and find ways to serve others in the coming year. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

What a perfect, powerful sermon, on how to beat the oppressor!
