What does the Bible say is the best way to resist temptation?

This is something we all struggle with. However, this does not mean we cannot overcome temptation. With the help of Christ, we can. Since temptation comes from Satan, it must be fought on a spiritual level. If one does not know Christ as their Savior, there is obviously no fellowship with Christ, so he cannot help you. That is because you are not connected spiritually, as "one in the spirit" with Christ, and that is why temptation is so hard for you to overcome, if you do not know Christ as your Savior. It is Jesus, that gives us strength spiritually. If you want to fight temptation from the devil, you must fight him spiritually, as you are dealing with the spiritual realm.

If you attempt to fight Satan by your own strength, he will just laugh at you. He does not follow your authority. However, he is very mindful of God's power and authority, and obeys Him. And this is very important for you to know, because the Bible doesn't say to fight Satan on your own strength and accord. It says to resist him and he will have to flee, but ONLY when you say, "In the name of Jesus Christ and by His authority, I command you Satan and demons to leave me.", will he leave!

The Bible provides several guidelines on resisting temptation. Key approaches include: prayer, recognizing and avoiding tempting situations, submitting to God, and replacing tempting thoughts with God's Word. Ultimately, reliance on God's strength and faithfulness is emphasized as the foundation for overcoming temptation.

Pray for Strength

First, accept Jesus as your Savior. Jesus taught his followers to pray, "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil" (Matthew 6:13). Prayer acknowledges dependence on God for help in resisting temptation.

Recognize and Avoid Temptation

The Bible advises us to "avoid it, do not pass by it; turn away from it...(Proverbs 4:14-15). This includes avoiding environments or situations where one is easily tempted, and getting away quickly when facing temptation.

James 4:7 states: "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you".

This highlights the importance of aligning oneself with God's will and seeking His strength to resist the devil's influence. God gave us a choice. That means we are capable of resisting temptation. We do know right from wrong and that's why we have a conscience.

Replace Tempting Thoughts

When faced with temptation, it's helpful to replace tempting thoughts with thoughts from God's Word. This can involve quoting scripture, reading scripture, focusing on God's promises, or meditating on God's positive and uplifting truths.

Be Faithful to God

One very important thing that keeps me strong in temptation is remembering how faithful God is to me and the fact that he has given me His best. Therefore, I only want to give God my best. We each have a mind of our own. We don't have to give in to temptation.

1 Corinthians 10:13 states: "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it".

This verse reminds believers that God provides a way out of temptation and that they are not alone in their struggles.

Seek Forgiveness and Healing

If one does fall into temptation, seeking forgiveness and turning back to God is crucial. This involves confessing sins, seeking God's grace and forgiveness, and relying on Him for strength to overcome future temptations.
