Because some have what others refuse to understand... Principals.
Principals are not just beliefs. You can be, or not be, an atheist and still either have, or not have, principles.
Going along with the crowd is easy. You don't even have to have the same values, to go along with the crowd. Yes, they are hypocrites!
Those with principles stand out as rebels, in crowds. Not so those who's values are just different.
The latter takes advantage of the crowd, while the former refuses to.
Yet the crowd is always wrong. Simply because it's a consensus.

A consensus is a compromise. Not necessarily totally wrong, yet never ever totally right!
You simply can not compromise and be totally right.
To be totally right, you absolutely must have principals to not compromise.
Yet the crowd is always wrong!
