I Like the Zoo

The Monkey's Revenge!

When my husband and I were first married he brought me down to visit his relatives in Brooklyn, NY. While we were there he took me to one of his favorite places, Prospect Park Zoo. The zoo is a very old one and many of the animals were kept in old-fashioned cages with iron bars like a jail. Being particularly fond of monkeys, I asked him to take me to the ape and primate exhibit.
Monkeys are very human-like, and in some situations will react the same way we do. And I arrived just in time to see a graphic demonstration of that!
One cage held two chimpanzees, a male and a female. Next door was another cage filled with small monkeys, who hung from the bars by their arms and long tails. One monkey was hanging by the bars that separated him from the chimps.
The male chimp thought he would be funny. Since he was bigger and stronger than the monkey, he decided to annoy the little guy in the same way an obnoxious human would do.
Sticking his hand through the bars, the chimp began to poke the monkey in the ribs, causing him to squawk in protest. The chimp actually had a big stupid grin on his face as he continued to harass his victim. He reminded me so much of a schoolyard bully.
As I watched the show I began to make up appropriate dialogue in my mind, as to what these two primates might have said in monkey talk.
"Hee-hee-hee!" laughed the chimp. "What's the matter? Don't like it? Huh? Don't like it?"
"You better leave me alone!" said the little monkey.
"Oh yeah?" laughed the chimp. "What are you gonna do about it, peewee? Huh? What are you gonna do about it?"
The chimp was far bigger and stronger than his victim, and he knew it. He continued his harassment until at last the little monkey could take no more. The next time the chimp stuck his hand through the bars the monkey flashed his little head and gave the annoying finger a terrible chomp!
The chimpanzee leaped down and squatted on the cement floor of the cage, holding his finger out and screaming in short bursts. "AAH! AAH! AAH! AAH! AAH! AAH!!!!"
The little monkey had gotten him good! Great drops of blood pulsed from his wound and onto the floor. He wasn't so tough now!
The zookeeper came over to the cage with a hose. He told the girl chimp, "Bring your boyfriend over here."
What happened next was amazing to watch.
The female slung the cowardly guy's arms over her shoulders and gripped them by the wrists while he lay limp across her back. She dragged him in a fireman's carry to the keeper, who waited with the water hose. The former bully appeared to be dead!
The zookeeper sprayed the chimp's wounded finger to wash away the blood . Then his girlfriend brought him closer so that the keeper was able to wrap a bandage around the bite. The female then carried the big baby back to a far corner of the cage and let him lie there.
Meanwhile the little monkey watched all this with a look of satisfaction on his face. "Chimpanzee, huh?" he seemed to say. "More like a chimp-pansy if you ask me!"
"Typical guy!" I said to my husband. "Always lets the girl come to his rescue."
I never forgot that amazing scene. It showed me that monkeys and apes are very much like people!

It was amazing to see him acting like he was dead.

The poor bully wanted pity.
He couldn't have performed it any better!
