"When you're taught to love everyone, to love your enemies, then what value does that place on love?"

Not sure what you mean. In the sermon on the mount, Bible says it is easy to love only those who love you.

I have a somewhat related personal experience that runs thusly. Had a lifelong best friend that became really unmanageable with alcoholism in our late twenties. Hung with him as long as I could stand, then went my separate way. He couldn't handle the loss so he decided to stalk me for the better part of six years. Being stalked sucks because you lose your sense of peace. The anger and frustration soured into a sea of hatred. Eventually when the stalking ended, I began to hope and pray good things for him. It was a hollow wish, at first, but became more genuine over time. It was the only way I could find out of the hatred. Someone quoted in my Buddhism meditation classes said, Hating someone is like swallowing poison and expecting it to kill them.
Hey, love isnt bad. Just love people that u think deserve love. Be u, not someone that a book or a guy in a cloak tells u to be. Maybe its not good to hold grudges, but that doesnt mean everyone deserves love. The Bible, by the way, is the last place youre gonna find "love", my friend lol
