Hammer thrower Gwen Berry turned away from the American flag during the playing of the national anthem at the U.S. Olympic Trials on Saturday in Eugene, Ore.
Berry, who placed third in the hammer throw Saturday to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, has been a vocal activist in the lead-up to the trials. When the anthem started, Berry took a turn so she was facing the stands. Toward the end of the anthem, she draped her black T-shirt reading “Activist Athlete” over her head.
