Why do competitive sports and games elicit so much violence from their fans?

174 people dead and 180 people injured in a stampede in Indonesia over a football match.
I think some weeks ago Hindus in UK were being attacked following a cricket match.

Why are people so identified with a team that they resort to such violence against other humans?

Why do people identify with a political ideology to the point that they engage in violence?

Why do people engage in religious practice to the point that they engage in violence?

Is there a difference between these and people who are violent over sports?

@CopperCicada sport is a sport. It's not supposed to be an identification with a set of beliefs.
@SW-User I remember growing up and watching people drag actual alligators by their pickup trucks through the neighborhood when Georgia beat Florida. Just tie one up to the trailer hitch. Seems a very similar identification as politics and faith.

@CopperCicada yes it seems so. Why though is what is confusing.
