Why do competitive sports and games elicit so much violence from their fans?

174 people dead and 180 people injured in a stampede in Indonesia over a football match.
I think some weeks ago Hindus in UK were being attacked following a cricket match.

Why are people so identified with a team that they resort to such violence against other humans?

Don’t forget it’s Indonesia, they don’t deal with small numbers.

@eMortal tbh I don't know much about that country or its culture.

@SW-User let’s just say the stadium was overcrowded. Officially about 6,000 more people than the intended capacity 40,000. I saw the images. It looks like there were 20,000 more.
