Why do competitive sports and games elicit so much violence from their fans?

174 people dead and 180 people injured in a stampede in Indonesia over a football match.
I think some weeks ago Hindus in UK were being attacked following a cricket match.

Why are people so identified with a team that they resort to such violence against other humans?

I've never understood sports mania. Always seemed creepy af to me to be cheering on some other dude and use the credit for his physical prowess to lord over other people, and cuss him out when he doesn't perform

@plungesponge I remember how rowdy it used to get when footie matches were played and there was intense energy you could feel around. I would feel intimidated in tubes/trains when it held a whole group of these fans.
But this is a whole new level.
