Why do competitive sports and games elicit so much violence from their fans?

174 people dead and 180 people injured in a stampede in Indonesia over a football match.
I think some weeks ago Hindus in UK were being attacked following a cricket match.

Why are people so identified with a team that they resort to such violence against other humans?

It is incredible how the herd gets worked up into a violent stampede. Perhaps we ought to take note of this and cool down the political rhetoric a bit,?

@SW-User I don't know exactly what triggers people to act like devil possessed animals. I am just saying all this spewing of hatred seems to be pushing towards something awful. We better all find some common ground to focus on.
