Why do competitive sports and games elicit so much violence from their fans?

174 people dead and 180 people injured in a stampede in Indonesia over a football match.
I think some weeks ago Hindus in UK were being attacked following a cricket match.

Why are people so identified with a team that they resort to such violence against other humans?

Strains my mind to realize a football match is collectively more dangerous to life than a widespread hurricane.

@SW-User in fairness to Indonesian humanity, deaths and injuries were primarily due to trampling and suffocation, which is more about panic than intentional violence.

@SW-UserFrom what I read, the sore loser fans stormed the pitch and fighting started. The police arrived and released tear gas to dispel the rioters, which panicked everybody and they stampeded.

That's my take from the news. I have been wrong before.
