Killing them isn't what gets you caught as much as it's what you do with the body afterwards that will decide that. So you will probably need to plan this out rather meticulously.
You could use electricity to kill them. Jumper cables from the car hooked to the 220 v from the oven touched to the sides of their neck should do it with no loss of blood.
Or you could use a biology trick called pithing. Jab a metal rod into the base of their skull at about a 33 degree angle upwards and shake it around killing them almost instantly and with very little blood loss.
With that said, shallow graves aren't dug by lazy people but rather it is because animals will only dig up what they are going to eat leaving the rest of the body still covered.
Offer to plant a tree for someone and put the body upright under it.
Find a residential construction site that is ready to pour concrete. Carefully move the rebar and dig your grave. Pat it flat and remove any extra dirt. Replace the rebar.
Lake Superior is so cold that a body will never float once it is dropped in.
Apparently pigs eat bones too.
