I think the last boxing match I watched was Sugar Ray Leonard-Roberto Duran.
I don't even know who the Heavyweight champion is now.

@eli1601 Tyson Fury. He knocked out the hype job clown that is Deontay Wilder.

@BlueMetalChick When I was in college, I paid 16 dollars, a lot of money back then, to go see the first Ali-Frazier fight on closed circuit TV at the New Haven Arena. This was before cable and pay per view.
It is still the greatest sporting event I have ever seen. Slightly above the 1980 USA-USSR miracle on ice.

@eli1601 The miracle on ice is a fun story, but it loses its luster once you realize that it was the only time in like forty five years that America managed to win an international hockey game against the Soviet Union. Every other time, the USSR won by miles.
But the reverse happened with basketball. America won every single basketball game save for one, when the Soviets finally got one. So I guess that's the same deal.

@BlueMetalChick I think the USA also won Olympic gold in 1960 and beat the Soviets. However, the USSR was not the powerhouse they were in 1980.
The big difference when the USSR won the basketball gold was, at that time, the USA used college amateurs, not pros like they do now.

@eli1601 Basketball seems to be one of those sports that people just can't really adapt to in most other countries. Japan has gotten damn good at baseball though.
eli1601 · 70-79, M
@BlueMetalChick Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and Carribean countries, especially the Dominican Republic, are all big baseball hotbeds.

@eli1601 Oh I forgot about the Caribbean.
