Why is American football called football?

Apart from running, it doesn't utilize much use of the players' feet. Not like real football (a.k.a. soccer)

Wouldn't "tackleball" be a more suitable name?

I heard once it was called football because it was played on foot, as opposed to horse-based games like polo.
