Or should it be based on how much money they bring in to the organization?

It's got to be linked to interest and ticket revenue, and of course the effort put in.

This is something that is brought up every year around Wimbledon time.

"Women should get the same amount as men!" the cry usually goes out. Without of course taking into account the lower interest and ticket sales, and the fact that the women play less sets and a shorter game.

And of course we have...

A "Battle of the Sexes" took place during the 1998 Australian Open between Karsten Braasch and the Williams sisters. Venus and Serena Williams had claimed that they could beat any male player ranked outside the world's top 200, so Braasch, then ranked 203rd, challenged them both. Braasch was described by one journalist as "a man whose training regime centered around a pack of cigarettes and more than a couple of bottles of ice cold lager". The matches took place on court number 12 in Melbourne Park, after Braasch had finished a round of golf and two shandies. With a broken wrist and a badly sprained ankle following a bar brawl he first took on Serena and after leading 5–0, beat her 6–1. Venus then walked on court and again Braasch was victorious, this time winning 6–2. Braasch said afterwards, "500 and above, no chance". He added that he had played like someone ranked 600th in order to keep the game "fun" and that the big difference was that men can chase down shots much easier and put spin on the ball that female players can't handle. The Williams sisters adjusted their claim to beating men outside the top 350

So it seems that performance should ALSO be a factor.
To earn the same money you need the same sponsorships and audience..
you can pay women the same to give yourself a PC slap on the back. But it might not stay viable

@LucyFuhr I just don't get, why would any of us here be concerned about top athletes who get say, $5 million a year.

I don't think so, because womens sports are not showcased the way men's sports are. The womens teams are rarely talked about.

I think it should be about how much they bring in. If your income:payment ratio is different, then there is favoritism, right? 🤔
I think if they are doing the same job and bringing in the same crowds the pay should be equal.

Who cares? They earn more in year than I will make a lifetime, so don't ask me to give a fuck.
