Stand for what you believe in. If you can't stand it is probably time to leave

Makes no difference to me -- it's America, not North Korea.

Its really their right to stand or sit, but what I don't get is how they associate social issues like "black lives matter" and "Police Brutality" with a national anthem, that you are going to hate that country just because those issues exist...like that sh*t doesn't exist anywhere else. I think America is a good country but it seriously has some faults that really is beyond the government control, there is no band-aid that is going to fix these issues and I don't see how sitting during a national anthem is going to fix anything.

@Tabatha: I don't know if its really accomplishing anything, sure it brings up a social issue and it gets talked about in the media. But its not like we are not aware of it existing, there is no solution...no one has brought up any solution at all.

Its their right not to but it doesn't provide any solutions
wyolatex · 41-45, M
That is a good point. It parallels the Olympic athletes and what they are representing.

It's American, not North Korea -- Freedom of Speech, etc.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
It's a free country, and being White I don't have anywhere near the experience the black athletes do with racism or injustice, so it doesn't bother me. Then again, the worship of a piece of cloth seems like an odd combination of religion and superstition to me to begin with. BUT, as you say, IF the athlete is on a national team and representing this country, then they should either stand or, if the want to protest, then protest by refusing to be on the team.
Go for it...

agreed... if you're representing your country on the international stage, stand for your countries national anthem or get lost!

I totally support them. Part of this country's strength is presumably its Constitution, which includes the First Amendment. The players are not making noise or disrupting the anthem, they're not involved in any destruction, like someone burning the flag. They're using their positions of privilege to make a statement on behalf of those not as fortunate. If it really is a free country, they have that right.

Well I have to agree with you on that.

I support it and the reason they're doing it. I think it's ridiculous that people think something as benign as not standing (non-violent, doesn't desecrate the flag or interrupt the national anthem) is "unpatriotic" while discrimination still exists. Why have a First Amendment, then ? what were the soldiers fighting for ?

@Tabatha: It's still early days yet. But I'm looking at the fact that it's being discussed and more and more people (sometimes from surprising quarters) are announcing that they're on board.
Colin Kaepernick is as dumb as a brick, but that's his right.
No, I read his comments about why he didn't vote. They are moronic.
bijouxbroussard · F
@SteveHamm: Well, I'd have to agree with that. If one can't even be bothered to vote, they have no room to complain about who's elected.
Here's the story if you're interested.

I think it is Bullshit. I understand you are trying to make a statement but during the national anthem is NOT the time or place. Show some respect and stand.
