In the debate about whether or no god exists, is the burden of proof on the theist to prove he does or the atheist to prove he doesn't? [Spirituality & Religion]

And please, none of this hippy, huggy feel-good bullshit about "neither side has to prove it! just let people believe what they want!"

It's a debate. We're not handing out participation ribbons.

When I was younger, it's on the theist. As I got older, it's on the atheist.

@Aphrodeity:

How do you mean?

@MetalGreymon: Devout Catholic Family. Hardcore Catholic school from infinity and beyond 'til I reached college. I was so resentful of the rigidity and hypocrisy that Dan Brown's books led me to believe, it's all about science. EVERYTHING can be explained through science and the rest is influenced by personal gain. Then I entered adult life and with each passing crisis and unexplainable moments, I just can't seem to shake the feeling that there IS a force mightier than us. In the end, I reconciled by believing in spirituality.,

@Aphrodeity:

Well i can understand that. People are by nature driven to seek an explanation for the things that happen to us. If we fail to see mundane explanation then we might well turn to a supernatural one.
But i'm not sure how that shifts the burden of proof from the party claiming that the supernatural exists onto the atheists and requiring them to prove that it doesn't
