Does life matter if we have no after life? [Spirituality & Religion]

Honestly when I was an atheist I wondered if nothing lasts then everything has no meaning.

Why should life have meaning ?
Humans are just functioning organisms that have hit the top of the food chain.
You can make life more interesting !
music; movies; theatre; ballet; sports; languages; literature; learning...etc.
PatrickORourke · 31-35, M
@Picklebobble2: without meaning without purpose we are but animals.

@Picklebobble2: When a pig does the ballet I will agree. I think those things do give life meaning...sorry to disagree with you there, but I still think you are a nice man. 🤗
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@PatrickORourke: But we are. Just another life form. Why do we need a purpose other than to ensure the future of the next generation ?
PatrickORourke · 31-35, M
cause that is like a machine thing build your replacement then die so your replacement can build its replacement. Who are we building for?
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@justmerae: You can have any view you like ! I never say "This is how it is !!!" lol
I just happen to believe that humans are just another form of life.
No more. No less.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@PatrickORourke: Why do we have to build for ANYONE ?
Why is it so essential that what we do should mean anything ??
PatrickORourke · 31-35, M
@justmerae: the fact that we can give meaning to things and look for meaning is what I think divides us from animals. But what does t matter if we just become dust in the end. if our stars will always explode and no record of us will ever survive where is the meaning to life?
Amylynne · 26-30, F
@PatrickORourke: so CHOOSE a purpose, CHOOSE to have meaning.
find what moves you and do something about it

can I ask about your religious experience? are you catholic Now?
( really this i not an attack,, I am very interested in how an adult non believer, becomes a believer,, I kind track this stuff both ways)
if you wish you can send it to me in private, i know this must be a delicate idera, and i do not want to subject you to the excoriations of the angry..
PatrickORourke · 31-35, M
@Picklebobble2: because we look for meaning so I think we were meant to find it. I think we can find meaning to life I just currently have not fund it yet.

@Picklebobble2: I see such beauty in art and literature and expression of one's self that it takes it to a higher level than mere mechanics.
To me life is more than breeding, fighting, and dying.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@PatrickORourke: Fair comment ! personally i think man still has some evolving to do first. Just like every other animal. We're just another step along the way.
PatrickORourke · 31-35, M
or maybe we are meant to look and not find to show to who ever or what ever may be watching what happens to hope when it is almost never given a chance. if we are meant to be searchers who can never find maybe we are being tested to see how long we search on faith alone.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@justmerae: Fair enough !
It is amazing that in a relatively short space of time we have gone from primordial ooze to Cavemen to whatever came next right up to where we are today.
PatrickORourke · 31-35, M
@Picklebobble2: how do we know we were cave men? evolution originally taught we came from monkeys with long tails not apes like today so who knows what it will say a hundred years from now. since they have yet to find the missing link I will still doubt.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@PatrickORourke: Maybe. Humans are capable of the most amazing things. And some of the most horrific !
When it comes to faith. I have no clue. A collection of stories from various authors in many languages. All assembled into whatever book you chose.
But for me, that's not the same as having a reason for being here.
PatrickORourke · 31-35, M
@Picklebobble2: My faith is that I was taught by my father that we would meet again after he died and I choose to believe we will.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@PatrickORourke: Fair enough ! question EVERYTHING !
Evolution is just a theory. Doubtless there are scientists studying various plants and animals looking for slight changes, thereby offering a better explanation of proof of it.
It's a start.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@PatrickORourke: Fair enough !
I can't, nor would i, argue against that !
If that's your belief, then i hope you're right !
PatrickORourke · 31-35, M
@Picklebobble2: that's the difference between micro and macro evolution. one has been proven but that one does not prove the other. the law of entropy disproves evolution.
PatrickORourke · 31-35, M
@Picklebobble2: its more like a hope and a faith my belief has always been that we end up as nothing and it is all meaningless but I have better days where I still dream of meaning. and maybe dreaming of meaning is meaning enough for us to get by.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@PatrickORourke: It doesn't. Entropy has been disproven again and again. And it kinda shows how silly the creationist theory really is !
Amylynne · 26-30, F
@PatrickORourke:
evolution originally taught we came from monkeys with long tails not apes like today so who knows what it will say a hundred years from now

this argument skips the method of science.. wHich is to continually update our knowlege. as we learn,, we change the model.
Science adjusts it's views based on what's observed
Faith is the denial of observation so that Belief can be preserved.

and oh yeah tailed monkeys and tail less apes,, have a common ancestor

do give a watch to Tim Minchin,, "storm" for well
MY own feelings on this
PatrickORourke · 31-35, M
@Picklebobble2: our geneses have always gotten worse as time progressed from what I have read maybe I just haven't read the right stuff. I also hear as perspectives change the evidence tends to side with the one searching. so maybe because I was raised catholic is why I tend to think more like a Christian. but every time I try and find meaning out of my God I just do not find it. Yet my favorite thing to do is question it. I think I just like the idea that if I can some day see my father again I will see him. it just seems that evolution alone leaves no way for that to ever happen and that sucks.
Amylynne · 26-30, F
@PatrickORourke:
the law of entropy disproves evolution.
that is a specious analogy, based on a logical fallacy
it entirely ignores the function of energy gradients,, a aprt of entropy that life exploits,, weird grammar is bewitching. But your grasp of physics is not. The Second Law of Thermodynamics roughly states that energy can only flow from a hot body to a cold one in a closed system, and that the measure of this is called entropy, which only ever increases. You’re parroting the argument that a living cell appears to contradict this, by maintaining order in their cellular innards. Alas living things are not closed systems. You’re using one thing you don’t understand to explain another. Your problem here is really with physics.

@Amylynne:
@Amylynne: It's a theory. That's all.
