But doesn't the reality of suicide prove that is fundamentally untrue?

Suicide usually requires some degree of pre-meditation. Death from exhaustion or disease, nervous breakdowns, and circumstantially-induced psychotic episodes are stronger counter-arguments to that nonsense claim.
