Is the word "Jew" thought of as demeaning? Cos I usually use it just to mean Jewish person, but some people say it's used to be insulting. [Spirituality & Religion]

My guess is that for a long time (and still the case in many places) when ever someone said "Jew" or "Jews" it was in a derogatory way, so after awhile it became a derogatory term

People call Senator Lieberman a Jew. I honestly don't think he feels it's offensive. I may be wrong

I think contemporary usage has shifted its meaning so now it wouldn't be considered offensive. Since it's not mainstream to be anti-Semitic as it was when the term "Jew" begin to be offensive
