As of today, scientists cannot create a fully functional living cell from scratch....meaning they cannot generate a cell with all the necessary components and functions of life solely from non-living materials.

A cell is a highly complex system with many interacting parts, making it extremely difficult to replicate from scratch.

Scientists can create synthetic DNA and manipulate existing cellular components to build structures that resemble cells and perform some functions, but these are not fully functional living cells.

Researchers are actively exploring ways to build cells from basic building blocks, but this is still a major scientific challenge.

Advances in cell-free transcription and translation reactions allow the expression of many genes, but these efforts are far from producing a fully operational cell.
