People do not respect anything they get for free.

A guy I know cleaned up a pocket knife he found. I'm sure if he had done it within the past decade, he would have taken pictures of the before and after. But he still caries that thing now.

I know people who treat a free meal like it's the best food they have ever had.

Gifts are free and we should (and do) cherish them.

@SW-User Me too. In fact I am one of them. I am typing this in a web browser that is free that is running on an operating system that is free. I thank all who have had a hand in creating them for making my life better.

About six years ago I found Compaq laptop in a skip (dumpster in US I think). It's still running and highly appreciated.

I've given away computer hardware (usually stuff discarded by the company I worked for) to people who could not afford to buy it and could see in their faces how much they appreciated it.
