Which is a superior foundation for morality: Christianity or Secular Humanism? [Spirituality & Religion]

While i think that Christianity has a number of good moral positions it also has some pretty wretched stuff which is (at least notionally) based on what a god wants.
On the other hand, secular humanism holds as it's metric the idea of human flourishing and reduction of harm. It can encompass absolutely every moral virtue claimed by Christianity but is beholden to none of the harmful, punitive dictates that come from religious dogma.

Therefor i say that Secular humanism has the superior foundation for a system of morality.

Neither, both are based on christianity... Calvinism... 😒
both are based on christianity.
Let's uncritically accept that as true. That doesn't preclude the possibility of on system being superior.
My F250 is based on Ford's original designs but it's damn sure a better vehicle lol

@Pikachu it is if you wish to exclude all the other cars around the world!

Basically what you have done.

@DeWayfarer

How do you mean? I'm comparing two things, one to another. There can be other discussions with other comparisons but this is a specific one.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Pikachu origins matter a great deal.

It is the basis of all religion for their very purpose for existing.

Christianities basis is to convert as many as possible. So everything under that line does the same.

Contrawise Hinduism could care less about converts. Same with Buddhist and so on.

@DeWayfarer There are five main religions in the world. In chronological order they are:
Hinduism
Judaism
Buddhism
Christianity
Islam

Is it a coincidence that the two "youngest" religions are heavily driven to convert others?

Oh btw, I'm a Greek Orthodox Christian🤷‍♂️
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@room101 i must disagree about those branches. Even if they are the "current" main ones. And three of them are apart of the "Abrahamic" religions which also have the same basis.

Those three are the worst. And it all started with Abraham.

@DeWayfarer

Of course origins matter.
But let me put this simply: if secular humanism shares origins with christian morality but differs in significant ways then it can be compared and contrasted to chrisitan morality in a hierarchical way.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Pikachu the divergence actually matters little since its basis is to covert others. As with all branches of Abrahamic beliefs.

That's the one thing they all share. I know of no others that are as fanatical about converting.

@DeWayfarer

lol well agree to disagree then.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Pikachu ok! 🙃
room101 · 51-55, M
@DeWayfarer What is there to disagree about? They are the five main religions in the world today. Christianity and Islam are the youngest of the five. Both Christianity and Islam seek to convert others to their particular religion. The other three don't.

If you want to ascribe a value judgement to my comment, that's down to you. I was merely elaborating on what you said about the basis of Christianity is to convert others.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@room101 those three are they Abrahamic or not?

That's what's to disagree with!

To me they're basically the same when it comes to "conversion"!
room101 · 51-55, M
@DeWayfarer What difference does that make? Are they three distinct religions or not?

Furthermore, we can only call them Abrahamic, and ascribe their origins to Abraham, if we believe that Abraham was a real person ie if we believe what the Torah (aka Old Testament) tells us.

My statement doesn't rely on belief. It stands on historical information. Both ancient and contemporary.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@room101 no they are not distinct!

All three claim abraham as their respective origins!
room101 · 51-55, M
@DeWayfarer They have in common the assertion that Abraham existed and that he was a prophet of a singular God. However, they vary in some pretty fundamental ways. In fact, their variances are so fundamental that....................yep, they are three distinct religions.
room101 · 51-55, M
@DeWayfarer oh and fyi..........Judaism does not seek to convert others. Not even a little bit.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@room101 as with the OP I must disagree.

@DeWayfarer Of course, that's your prerogative. And.....erm......it's night where I am. But thanks for the sentiment.
