Why are there two DIFFERENT versions of the 10 commandments? Exodus 20:2-17 and Exodus 34:10-26 (which is written in God's own hand) [Spirituality & Religion]

There's a little bit of overlap but the second version seems even more human created than the first, yes?

[c=#BF0000]1) Be careful not to make a treaty with those who live in the land; for when they prostitute themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you and you will eat their sacrifices. 16 And when you choose some of their daughters as wives for your sons and those daughters prostitute themselves to their gods, they will lead your sons to do the same.

2) “Do not make any idols.

3) “Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread. For seven days eat bread made without yeast, as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Aviv, for in that month you came out of Egypt.

4) The first offspring of every womb belongs to me, including all the firstborn males of your livestock, whether from herd or flock. 20 Redeem the firstborn donkey with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. Redeem all your firstborn sons.

5) No one is to appear before me empty-handed.

6) “Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during the plowing season and harvest you must rest.

7) “Celebrate the Festival of Weeks with the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, and the Festival of Ingathering at the turn of the year.[b] 23 Three times a year all your men are to appear before the Sovereign Lord, the God of Israel. 24 I will drive out nations before you and enlarge your territory, and no one will covet your land when you go up three times each year to appear before the Lord your God.

8) “Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast, and do not let any of the sacrifice from the Passover Festival remain until morning.

9) “Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the Lord your God.

10) “Do not cook a young goat in its mother[/c]’s milk.”

Exodus 34:10-26
What's that then?

God is making a covenant with His people. But, you know that already, don't you.

Apparently he was supposed to be re-writing the original 10 commandments so what happened?
The Lord said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke
@Pikachu Who told you this? Does the bible say those were 10 commandments? No, there are over 600 laws in the old testament. The 10 commandments are clearly the only 10 commandments - found in Exodus 20. Jesus named 6 in Mark 10:19:

"But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone. Honor your father and mother.'"

God did. In the bible:

The Lord said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke

@Pikachu As I read the chapter, it appears are right about this one.

@Pikachu but you said the second version seems more human created than the first. How did you possibly come to that conclusion? 80% of it is the same

@LoveTriumphsOverHate

Oh because the first 10 commandments are at least mostly aspirational directives like don't lie, steal or kill while the second 10 are more don't make friends with foreigners and don't cook baby goats in their mother's milk. Just much more obviously directives for a tribe of humans by humans.

@Pikachu Okay, I see where the confusion is now. The 10 commandments are in Exodus 20. In Exodus 34, God is speaking to Moses, giving him directives. That isn't what's inscribed on the stones though. What's inscribed on the stones are 10 commandments listed in exodus 20.

Hmm it doesn't really read that way to me.
Moses broke he tablets and god told him to bring some news ones the next day so he could write on them what was on the first ones.
It then goes on to describe the proclamations of god just as it does in the first 10 commandments.
If we read it the way you suggest then the new tablets are completely ignored and and we just assume he filled them out and then decided to riff some new material?
That doesn't jive for me.

The answer is in your own post:
The Lord said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke."
Also, Deuteronomy 10:4-5

The Lord wrote on these tablets what he had written before, the Ten Commandments he had proclaimed to you on the mountain, out of the fire, on the day of the assembly. And the Lord gave them to me. 5 Then I came back down the mountain and put the tablets in the ark I had made, as the Lord commanded me, and they are there now.

Now, since the Scripture says "I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke," & "The Lord wrote on these tablets what he had written before, the Ten Commandments," we can infer that the same commandments that were written on the first tablet are written on the new tablets.

So, there are either two conclusions:

a) both sets of tablets contained the 10 commandments listed in Exodus 20, or

b) both sets of tablets contain the directives listed in Exodus
Chapter 34, verse 10-26

Now, you said there are 10 commandments/directives in chapter 10-26, which is untrue. I count 14 or 15, not 10, and since Deuteronomy 10:4 says there were only 10, that supports conclusion a.

Also, I've already shown you that Jesus named 6 of them in Mark 10:19:

"You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone. Honor your father and mother.'"

In addition, we can also look at other sources like Jewish-Roman historian Josephus, who knew the law better than anyone living today - he mentions the 10 commandments.

When we put all the evidence together, it becomes very clear. There's only one set of 10 commandments. What is listed in Exodus 34:10-26 are not the 10 commandments.

Why are we saying that the proclamation earlier in exodus is what was written on the tablets and not the proclamation later?
LoveTriumphsOverHate · 36-40, M
@Pikachu

1) We can be sure that the 10 commandments are those in Exodus 20 because Jesus Christ mentioned 6 of the 10 commandments in Mark 10:19, and he called them "the commandments."

2) Josephus writes (Book III Chapter 5, The Antiquities of the Jews):

And they all heard a voice that came
to all of them from above, insomuch that no one of these words
escaped them, which Moses wrote on two tables; which it is not
lawful for us to set down directly, but their import we will declare
5. The first commandment teaches us that there is but one God, and
that we ought to worship him only. The second commands us not to
make the image of any living creature to worship it. The third, that we
must not swear by God in a false matter. The fourth, that we must
keep the seventh day, by resting from all sorts of work. The fifth, that
we must honor our parents. The sixth that we must abstain from
murder. The seventh that we must not commit adultery. The eighth,
that we must not be guilty of theft. The ninth, that we must not bear
false witness. The tenth, that we must not admit of the desire of any
thing that is another's.

3) What many non-Christians fail to grasp is that the church has been established for nearly 2000 years. Interpretations and doctrines have been passed down for generations. It is certain that the church should know what the 10 commandments are because this information has been passed down for generations.

Well ok, i guess in the first version it does explicitly say that those were the words that he wrote.
Exodus 34 is a little misleading though i think.
